Leave Adelaide and travel North on Highway 1 towards Port Augusta. Turn off Highway 1 approx 7km before Pt. Augusta & head to Quorn. Great bush camping can be had at Warren Gorge some 21 km out of Quorn but make sure to take your own firewood.
From Quorn head to Hawker and turn right to Wilpena, the heart of the Flinders. The campground at Wilpena Pound is a good base for exploring the Flinders without towing the trailer. A must do is “Skytrek” a 6-7 hour 4WD trip which starts from Willow Springs Station and takes you to the highest point in the Flinders you can drive to, Mt.
Caernavon. It is sensational!! Other must do’s are Brachina Gorge, Parachilna Gorge & Stokes Hill Lookout.
Head north to Blinman (Check out the front bar of the Pub) and turn right to Wirrealpa and follow signs to Balcanoona/Arkaroola. Chambers Gorge about 26km out of Wirrealpa is well worth a look and is good for bush camping. The aboriginal rock art there is worth the walk.
Arkaroola has a basic rocky camping ground but the highlight here is the Ridge Top Tour (Book ahead & it takes 4hours) and night sky gazing through their telescope. There are also some good 4 wheel driving trips around here so plan for a stay of at least 2 nights.
Go back to Balcoona and head for Copley passing through Italowie Gorge where it is said that R.M. Williams first started making leather goods for local stockmen. From Copley travel south calling in at Leigh Creek & Beltana on the way to Parachilna where the Prairie Hotel is renowned for its game meals.
Keep heading south to Hawker, Quorn & Pt. Augusta. There’s a good camp ground approx 50km south of Pt. Augusta at Mambray Creek entrance to the Mt. Remarkable National Park. Lots of emus, kangaroos, birds, lovely setting but only one cold shower for the whole park and a touch expensive. Just south of there at Baroota rodeo ground its $5-/night and hot showers!!!
From here its only two and a half hours back to Adelaide.
