Leave Adelaide & head north on Highway 1 to
Port Augusta and continue north to Woomera via Pimba. Take time out
to look at the rocket displays in public parks in Woomera. Proceed
north to Roxby Downs which is the town for the Olympic Dam Mine. An
interesting journey 30km to Andamooka will display the difference
between an ordered development of Roxby Downs & opal mining boom
town where water is still not reticulated. Bush camps can be found
within a 10km radius of Roxby Downs.
Travel north 115km to join the Oodnadatta track at
Lake Eyre South where the vast vistas of salt lake/water can be seen
depending on the seasons. Follow the Oodnadatta track to William
Creek & check out the pub. Facilities available at William
Creek.
Journey West to Coober Pedy, a drive that is
spectacular after recent rainfall with plenty of ground cover.
Coober Pedy is well worth a 2 night stay with opal mines,
underground churches, underground 5 star hotel & other
attractions. A must see approximately 20kms north is the Breakaways,
a multi coloured rock/sand formation steeped in Aboriginal history.
A visit at sunset is a photographers delight.
Travel south from Coober Pedy along the Stuart
Highway to the turn off to Kingoonya, approx 53 kms before Glendambo.
A 35 km drive brings you to Kingoonya on the trans continental
railway. From here travel south through the Gawler Ranges, one of
South Australia’s newest National Parks. There are several
designated bush camping sites here, however check at the rangers
office.
